Honeysuckle by Paula Kuitenbrouwer
There is a story behind this honeysuckle drawing. The home-owner, who planted it, had a friend who was blind. He would ask his visiting friend; ‘Shall we sit outside in the garden?’, to which the blind friend would reply that it made no difference to him whether he was inside or outside. ‘I can’t admire your garden,’ he would remark.
The owner of the house set out to make a difference, and thus planted this honeysuckle. The following summer his friend again replied that for him it wouldn’t make any difference being inside or outside.
‘It will,’ now said the owner, proudly. ‘You will smell the garden.’ And indeed, from then on the owner and his friend would sit outside near the honeysuckle and enjoy its fragrance.
